Fremont Department of Utilities 69kV Transmission System Protection Upgrade

The 69kV transmission system at the Fremont Department of Utilities (FDU) in Fremont, Nebraska, was based on 1950's vintage pilot wire relays. In recent years, FDU had experienced numerous mis-operations due to relay and communications failures. P & E Engineering Co. assisted FDU with analyzing the failures and developing alternatives to replace the ailing system. Based on the recommendation of P & E Engineering Co., FDU opted to replace fourteen 69kV terminals using Schweitzer SEL-311C relays. Pilot protection utilizes Mirrored Bits communicated over spread spectrum radios.

P & E Engineering Co. developed construction contracts and installation drawings. P & E Engineering Co. also developed settings for all of the relays.
